The Merchant Navy Class locomotives were built by the Southern Railway to the design of it's Chief Mechanical Engineer;  Oliver V. S. Bulleid.
The class was named after the shipping lines that the used docks that the Southern Railway served.
In all 30 Merchant Navy class locomotives were built and in their original form exhibited many innovations.

In the closing months of World War II, the Southern Railway introduced a new class of Pacific locomotive in response to a need
for a fast and powerful mixed traffic engine and also to relieve the Southern's war-weary locomotive stock.
The "Light Pacific" copied as closely as possible the design of the successful Merchant Navy class.
Eventually, in the immediate post war years,110 of these light weight 4-6-2 pacifics were built to Bulleid's design
they formed the West Country and Battle of Britain classes, which were originally fitted with air smoothed casing and chain driven valve gear.
